Spotted this edger covered in dust in a shed clearance picture and thought it was worth a look being a sucker for anything vintage in good original condition. Gave her a quick clean and was amazed at the condition, bit of fresh fuel, runs like new.

My uncle just bought a a new Stihl saw and was trying to explain to me about this new starting feature that seems so complicated and a wast of time. I was a bit confused when he showed me how to start it that if I had to borrow it I wouldn't have a clue how to get it running, I'm pretty sure it's got that tool less chain adjuster thingy as well if I remember correctly it's some kind of plastic wheel you rotate but it's so plastic I'm surprised they haven't made the bar plastic yet.

I was guessing 2 pole aswell but couldn't find any reference anywhere, most stators coils have an even pole count 6,8,12 so thought it would be 2 pole with the 2 pick up ends just was unsure cause of the single windings between the 2 pole ends.
Mines similar to the photo you uploaded with the stator coil and lighting coil opposite each other, one excites the ignition coil via the cdi the other connects to the rectifier for 12v charging.

Not quite sure If I'd hold my breath on that ???, currently there's still quite a few of these Model 38's out there. They show up every second Auction down here in Good Ol' Scott Bonnar town.

Like I suggested in another thread, I'd say in 50 years there won't be a substance called "Petrol". All these items will simply be static display pieces to merely look at.

Pennsylvania Lawnmowers sold here in quantity, and I think their
edgers were part of the imported range.

Your images, I think, show post-WWII models - with rubber tyres.
'Craftsman' was a store brand - probably made for Sears.
[The patent date of 1918 is a trap - with these dates remaining
on machines for many decades].

I have a reproduction Pennsylvania catalogue from eBay's Silensmessor.
It shows pre-WWII machines similar to yours.
