Hi

And particularly to any South East Qld / Brisbane members. I have made several enquiries in relation to suitably qualified mechanics and tradesman that are prepared to assist the non commercial owners of cylinder mowers in Brisbane with little success.

I would be interested in hearing of any positive stories or succesful adventures of any members in the Brisbane area. I am looking someone who can grind cylinders properly and offer a fitting service...

Rob, I am in the same situation and location, need a reputable grinder for a couple of reels I have. I have found a guy - Bob Garthside Mowers in Ipswich but have not seen his work. Apparantly a couple of loacl bowls clubs use him for resharpening their reels. I am 98% sure he grinds the bedknife to suit the reel as well which I have found via telephone conversation that other shops do not offer.

Another member just has had his sharpened on the southside of brisbane - rossf - he may be able to comment on his sharpening job.

Rob, had my 17 inch reel & bedknife sharpened by "Sam the mower man" on Wynnum Road & I am quite happy with the result, website- www.samthemowerman.com.au/contact.htm however just google accordingly & you will find several others (I even managed to set the reel perfectly so it cuts news-paper on all blades ;-)

Craig, what do you mean- "ginds the bedknife to suit the reel"? I assumed the reel was simply ground to be even accross all blades and the bedknife was ground to a sharp egde. Haven't heard of the reel being groung to suit though??

cheers Ross

Hi Ross, the bedknife is ground on the top horizontal surface and on the front edge...rather like what you see on a pair of scissors; the square front edge of the bedknife and the rotating scissor action of the reel; (not contacting the bedknife though, there is minute clearance) is where the cutting takes place. The top surface of the bedknife is ground to the clearance angle of the cylinder. wink

Hi Ross

I have purchased a new reel, sole plate and bottom knife and will be installing in a couple of weeks. I have some cleaning up work to do on the turf/garden in the area I will be using the mower. It has been sharpened /set by the supplier in Ballarat and I am confident it will be sharpened properly. I am also investing in the front roller and having it hard chromed for $150-$175 in Rocklea.

Did you have much trouble getting the cylinder back in and aligned. Any hints would be appreciated as this is the first Scott Bonner / Rover I have messed with..

G'day All Bris Vegas folks,

I'm out towards Ipswich and recently had my reel and bedknife sharpened through Bob Gartside mowers (in Ipswich).

He has a specific cylinder reel sharpener ($45K worth he was saying) and it was about $70 bucks total for the both to be done. As a side note, he seems pretty knowlegable and mentioned that he did some time in the SB factory during his early days.

They did a great job, and I would easily recommend their work.

Feel free to contact me if you want any more info or local advice on SB45 (not that I have much in that department) other than local providers of services and how I found the reno process.

Cheers,

Salty

Hi all,
as for Bob Gartside there under the bridge, been there since day dot and flooded out just as many times. That is good news that he does sharpening for I didn't know and only a 5 minute drive away.
