My 40 year old Masport cultivator is fitted with a B&S 5HP horizontal shaft motor. Model 132232-0331 It has been good and reliable over the years though a bit cosmetically tired. About six months ago I gave it an overhaul and rebuilt the carby and a new head gasket and it ran like a charm afterwards. I used it to prepare an area of about 6 square meters for some roll out lawn with out it missing a beat until about 30 seconds from finish it died. A quick check and I realised the governor spring was missing ( way of lack of tension on the governor linkage rather than knowledge of the actual part or location.)

Problem is I am not sure what the spring looks like or where it hooks up. I have the B&S manual but it does not show my specific setup so I am at a loss as to what or where.

Can anyone help? Coming up to spring and I would like to prepare the veggie beds

Here is the illustrated parts list for your engine:

Here is the operator's manual:

Without some pictures of your engine I can't tell which type of governor it has. Here is what seems to be the most common type for 130000 series engines (from B&S workshop manual):

Note that Item 8 is the governor spring. Please post pictures of the corresponding areas of your engine (including both around the carburetor, and around the governor lever) so we can confirm which design you have.

Thanks Grumpy - I'm in Brisbane for 2 days I'll have a look on Friday and try and get some photos - similar layout but no manual adjustment - the cut away was confusing me at a quick glance, thought it was inside the gear box till now after I blew your picture up in a photo editor - picture from my manual is a little small for the detail

I have a couple of 5hp motors at home, if you like I can try and get a pic when the rain stops for a bit, mine are of the correct era to give a good idea smile

That would be helpful Joe - we can finish up with a better thread on that governor type if we have several pictures of different engines. I notice David's carburetor does not have the pull-out choke, it has what looks like a Welch plug instead. There are several choke linkage types as well as what looks like a couple of different governors.

Ill see what I have, im pretty sure mine have a knob for the choke however I will get a few photos of the layout as the govenor part should be similar, and a couple of photos from a 3.0hp with a manual choke for comparison smile

Mine has two manual levers - Choke and fixed or friction throttle which has stop, idle and run positions. These come though a square plate facing the rear of the engine next to the carby.

Here is some pics of the engine. The throttle lever operates the rod that goes down to the bottom of the engine (right hand rod in close up next to the governor lever which is on the right. The governor lever then goes up to a bell crank that operates the throttle in the carby (photo turned during upload (right=bottom)[Linked Image]

I notice there is a tab with a hole on the throttle "rack" at the bottom of the lever and almost above it on the governor lever (behind rod)there is a "T" - wondering if a spring would go between these points-similar to the diagram above.

Last photo is looking straight down on carby - white rod is the choke lever

Thanks for posting the pictures, David. So far I'm not understanding them, though. Can you show us the area around numbers 7 and 8 on the illustration? You may need to remove the fuel tank for me to see what is going on - or perhaps someone else is interpreting the pictures a lot better than I am. I'd also like to see Joe's pictures, in the hope that I can relate to those more easily.

The second picture is the area 7 & 8 but the upload turned the picture on its side. When the right way up the left hand rod is the throttle connection the right and slightly set back is the governor. (sorry I got them back to front in the earlier post )

I've rotated the picture, which helps me quite a bit but the extreme angle means I can't find the upper anchor point for the governor spring. The lower anchor point seems to be the lower hole circled in yellow, and it looks to me as if the upper anchor point should be midway between where the two vertical links are attached, in the upper yellow circle:

If we had a picture perpendicular to the governor link, we should be able to see all this clearly.

Thanks grumpy - just above your top yellow circle behind the vertical governor connecting rod is a T shaped tab the sticks out horizontally from the governor lever - I think that must be the spring attachment. It's a similar setup to Fig 28 under Governors in the manual just a different attachment to the governor lever.

Now to find the right spring - the one on host site looks a bit short for the distance.

The parts list I posted earlier in this thread says your engine needs Spring - Governor P/N 262282.
Here is the listing at my favourite US parts store, which says 262282 has been replaced by P/N 690376, which costs US$5.18 plus shipping:
http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=briggs_and_stratton&mn=132232-0331-01&pd=spring-governor

Here is what it looks like:

I can't find it in the Outdoorking online store.
