Hi all,

I've inherited my grandpa's 70's vintage Super 2. It would start, but not run right, seemed always to be flooding itself no mater how the mixture adjustment was done... I did a carb rebuild and it ran better for a bit, but before long it was the same thing. Put another carb kit in it last week, and that didn't change it at all.

The one I have has a Walbro HDC-57 carb in it. It starts fine, but then quickly starts bogging down. With no choke and full throttle, it won't make enough rpm's to engage the clutch, but it will run like that indefinately. When the gas tank is nearing empty, it picks up rev's and runs great for about 20 seconds. Fill tank and it's back to lousy/flooding.

Any thoughts?? Were these things (either the saw or this carb) notoriously awful? I've got an old XL-12, but the super 2 would make a great little pruning/limbing saw if it ran OK. I told my dad about this, and he just smiled and then confessed he could never get it running right either (hence it appeared on my doorstep)! [Linked Image] Made me laugh.

thanks for any help you can offer!

Brent,
When you replaced the diaphrams did you replace the needle?
If not replace the needle and then see if your flooding stops.

Thanks for the reply... yes I replaced the needle. The spring did seem to close the needle properly before the diaphram was on etc... When reading some more on this, I'm wondering whether perhaps I might have put on the diaphram and gasket in the wrong order. I was very careful about putting things on the same way they came off both times I did the carb, but maybe they were installed incorrectly by someone else before I got the saw. (?) Does the gasket go on the carb body side, or the cover side of the diaphram? Now that I think about it, it's supposed to go on the carb body side, between the carb body and diaphram... right?

Brett,
The gasket goes to the carby body and then metering diaphram. If you have put it on the other way around then the machine will flood and you will not be able to adjust the mixture jets correctly.

Update:

So, the diaphram and gasket were NOT installed the wrong way around. But... the pivot lever for the needle valve was sitting a bit proud. When installed, the diaphram was opening the needle a bit.

I tweaked the pivot lever so it was flush with the machined surface of the carb, and viola... Runs like a champ.

Thanks!

Brent
