Greetings from NZ. I have a Scott Bonnar Supercut, and I have removed the reel and bottom blade to take in to get sharpened.
The last time I had it done, the chap said he likes to put a small 5 degree angle on the reel to give it a keener cutting edge, but in the owners handbook, it says that the blade should be ground squarely, so that it can be put in the other way around to give a fresh sharp blade when the first dulls. The blade carrier has been made reversible for that purpose.

What is the opinion of the team please?
Thank you,

Ray

Hi Ray,

I would have thought a professional sharpening chap would first ask what you intend to use
the mower for before recommending a 5 degree angle, unless he is recommending a 5 degree
angle to make more profit from more regular sharpening.

For Home use I'd go with the blade being ground square for a longer lasting reel and less cost.

In a professional environment, when cutting high-maintenance lawns, such as putting greens or lawn bowl greens, a 5-degree angle on the reel can indeed provide a sharper edge, potentially leading to a cleaner cut initially. A keener angle can improve cutting performance but may result in faster dulling, particularly if the mower is used frequently or on tougher grass types. This may require more frequent sharpening and maintenance.

Durability vs. Sharpness: A square edge may be more durable over time, which can be particularly useful for residential lawns where the grass isn't overly tough. If you are cutting more resilient turf or using the mower frequently, the choice may vary.

If you prioritize an initial sharp cut and are willing to maintain the blade more frequently, a slight angle could be advantageous.

Hi Ray,

The previous answer I gave was from what I read on forums but I think you may need an expert sharpeners opinion
if there is any advantage of the 5 degree angle on your reel mower for longevity.

The manufacturers recommendations on reel sharpening is what you would normally do
to sharpen the reel.

Some reels have relief angles that maintain a better longer lasting cutting edge that require less grinding
intervals.

I have seen some people say a lathe is better for sharpening the reel and may be a lot cheaper as I
heard a guy on this forum had a reel sharpened for $55. in 2013 at a sharpening machine shop.
