Hi Everyone at ODK,
I am looking to purchase a used Powertorque ignition coil with attached module, in working order. I am happy to pay up to $30 for one, and will cover reasonable postage to Beecroft, Sydney.

you've just exposed a flaw with the later coil with inbuilt module. As the module is what usually fails, and not the coils on Powertorque engines, having it like that forces you to replace the lot instead of the cheaper and readily available separate module.
Must have been designed to simplify production.
One disadvantage of the later Chinese made engine castings over the Australian ones.
I wonder if there's a way to bypass the dead module and and fit a different one?

In relation to the ignition units that contain the module and coil as a single unit, rather than the earlier two piece setup, I was wondering exactly the same thing.
Could I pull the plastic covering off and affix a new module to the wiring of the coil?
It would be theoretically possible, but depending on how it’s been constructed will determine the feasibility in a practical sense.
As you say, the change was most likely economic in nature. I much prefer the setup with the coil and module wired separately. So much easier to deal with.

There is an upside to the combined setup. It delivers a more powerful spark which leads to more consistent starting I imagine.

You have nothing to lose pulling your old coil apart to see for yourself how feasible it is to graft a standalone module to it.

Otherwise, surely you can find a dead later type PT to scavenge one off, or even replace the whole engine with another one?

I'd check local tip shop or metal recycler for old powertorque mowers..... might get a few good parts, coils carbs.....who knows. cheers
I saw a couple of PT 40km north of me for free, pretty junky, but I'm too bust at the moment.. But they are everywhere.

Unfortunately people who grab them are even more prolific. Both times I found a Victa PT recently, it was only seconds before someone else stopped to grab them too.

I too have noticed that ( in Sydney I refer to only) it’s becoming increasingly difficult to locate the old mowers like I used to be able to. Seems like the only way to acquire them now, and I mean the real wrecks that used to exist on the kerb, is to pay for them.
E bay/gumtree-$30-$40, so I did that and parted an old commando and another one out. Coils and module were perfect, resistance on module and coil both low, in the order of 6-7 k ohms.

The other area I would ask others of, is does anyone ever bother dealing with the surface rust that builds up on the soft iron E core? I usually sand if bad, apply the usual phosphoric acid, then black enamel. Any one else do this to help them survive? Techniques???

It’s the Powertorque coil with the module built into it- not with the coil and module being separate units, but either will be fine.

Here is a coil with images showing it CLICK HERE but note that you have an extra '0' quoted in your part number it should be MA05599A which includes the 'E' plate for the coil.

It should work but check the images on the site.

Another option is buying a complete mower on Facebook marketplace they are around $30. and Gumtree around $50.
but they don't sell quickly these days so you can always offer the seller less or look for a local tip shop or scrap metal yard.

Some people advertise the mowers for free as they just want them gone.

As I said PT coils very rarely fail because being down low on the motor they are kept cool by the fan

Just as an update, I have reinstalled the coil and there is no spark. When I can get a helper I will test some more with a spark cable tester just in case its a bad cable or connection somewhere. Oh and I will also remove the wires to the carbie to rule out those causing havoc.

I have been keeping an eye out on gumtree and will go to the tip when I get a chance to maybe find a donor motor. I will give it another few weeks and if no joy, its off to the tip ( or perhaps for parts on gumtree). Its had little use and has electric start, so its a shame really.

Have you moved the screw in the plug cap, that sometimes can kill the spark
