Hey,

Picked up these whipper snippers yesterday,

STIHL KM 56 RC

WEED EATER FeatherLite SST PLUS

Don't know a great deal about them, but the head on the STIHL I need a grass one that takes nylon-type string. I was considering getting this

trimmer head (link)

nothing flash, just a basic head... was wondering though, can anyone recommend an alternative style head for this trimmer to cut grass with?

Another thing, can anyone used a metal-type wire rather than nylon string ? Can they be used in trimmer heads that take nylon string ?

Thanks, smile

The one you have given the link to on ebay seems fine Widget

I have been handed a few GA Spares Speedfeed heads to install - they seem to go well as well. You just wind them up to install the line, not take apart.
The only problem I have had is installing one on a mcculloch (carbon copy of your featherlite). The speedfeeds don't work with trimmers with no clutch.

The thing will run you around $55, for a straight shaft trimmer you need the BRN6923 from memory

Good thing is the replacement end caps (where you bump) only cost around $12 each, and the rest of the body is pretty indestructible

Thanks Tyler, Ill look into it :), though at $55, feels a bit steep. The trimmer is only for home use, small-ish property, for just hitting the fence-line.

Had a quick look, from what I could find, seem to be similar price as to the Speedfeed head Tyler mentioned. Might be better quality than the cheaper ebay one I linked, but as I would use it once in a while whenever the grass grew, didn't want to spend a whole lot.

Anyone have suggestions about those heads that you clip in a piece of string, rather than winding it around the cup ? Can't remember the name... seem like an easier option, assuming there's one available for this model ?

Thanks smile

I haven't checked but my grandson has a Makita bent shaft line trimmer and he said a new head for that machine is $80, I think somebody is stitching somebody on these heads

I can get an aftermarket head for around $20, not too sure about Genuine, I think I saw some for double that, can't find where I saw it.
No tip shop near me either :(>> there is a 'junk yard' I haven't been to in a long while, but last time I went there, they were pretty expensive... might have a squiz anyways.

Where can I find a list of cross-compatible brands that might share they same/similar heads ? Or will any head pretty much fit, as long as the bolt hole size matches ?

I have a pile of line trimmers here and I doubt any 2 are the same, I occasionally scratch around through them trying to mix and match but usually don't have much success
